Security Advisory: iOS 13 & iPadOS Keyboard Bug (2019)

On iOS, third-party keyboard extensions are designed to function on their own without needing network access. They are not allowed to store what you type unless you explicitly grant full access permissions to enable additional features.

Following the release of iOS 13, Apple issued a warning about an unpatched problem that could allow third-party keyboard apps to grant themselves “full access” to everything you type, even if you had previously denied permission.

This bug did not affect Apple’s built-in keyboards. It only impacted users who installed third-party keyboards that request full access, such as SwiftKey, Grammarly, or Gboard.

If you felt insecure about this issue, you could check your settings by navigating to: Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.

Apple confirmed a fix was in development for an upcoming software update. As a temporary mitigation, users could uninstall third-party keyboards to remain on the safe side.

Note: This was a historical bug from 2019 affecting iOS 13 and has long since been patched by Apple.
